Possibility Of Ashkenazi Candidacy Stirs Israel Politics

ICEJ, 9 July 2013

Shelly Yacimovich, leader of Israel’s Labor Party, announced this week that she will bring forward the next race for chairman of the party, and a source close to former IDF chief of the general staff Gabi Ashkenazi said Monday that she’s doing it because she’s afraid the popular general will usurp her.

Ashkenazi is barred from seeking political office until February of 2014, and the primary must be held no later than March 2014, but Yacimovich has reportedly demanded that it be held no later than December of this year.

"He is calm, but she is panicking," a source close to Ashkenazi said.

"He has never said he wants to enter politics, join Labor, or run for anything."

Yacimovich’s office declined a request to comment.
